What is Gaydar?

Gaydar is the ability of a person to quickly assess homosexuality in other people. A person that has this gaydar can tell an individual’s sexual orientation (can be a gay, bisexual or straight) without the need to see obvious physical clues such as gay fashion or lingo.

Study Shows Gaydar is Real

A recent study showed that some people have the ability to identify if a person is a gay or straight. Researchers from the University of Washington and Cornell University invited 129 college students to look at photos of young men and women and to judge them as either gay or straight. The respondents were 65 percent accurate in assessing gay and straight women and 57 percent accurate in identifying gay and straight men.

Researchers presented a total of 413 photos to 129 student volunteers. The photographs collected from Facebook.com profiles of self-identified straight or gay people living in 11 major US cities include images of:

• 111 gay men
• 122 straight men
• 87 gay women
• 93 straight women

Some of the participants saw images of upside-down faces, and others were shown the faces right-side up. In both cases, the black and white cropped photos of young men and women were shown for only 50 milliseconds.

Lead author Joshua Tabak, a doctoral candidate in psychology at the University of Washington says that, “(The photos) were so briefly shown, they were grey-scale, and they were turned upside down. Let that sink in for a minute and it’s shocking that people could make these judgments so efficiently.”

The images that were shown to the participants were all cropped such that hairstyles weren’t visible and any accessories such as glasses, piercings and even make up are not seen.

Gaydar: More Accurate for Women

Tabak says that in general, gaydar is more accurate when people judge women than men. He also said that it is a little surprising result since the concept of the gay man is more rampant in popular culture.

“But the reason accuracy was lower for men’s faces was that there were more false alarms: incorrectly labeling a straight person’s face as gay. So maybe it’s because we have so much more exposure to the concept of a gay man that we’re more liberal in labeling a man’s face as gay than a woman’s.” says Tabak.

But he said that the reason detection accuracy was lower for men’s faces was that there were more false alarms: incorrectly labelling a straight person’s face as gay.

According to the researchers, this gaydar study is the first research to demonstrate:

(a) that configural face processing significantly contributes to perception of sexual orientation, and;

(b) that sexual orientation is inferred more easily from women’s vs. men’s faces

The findings of the gaydar study were published May 16, 2012 in PLoS ONE, a journal that publishes reports on Science research.

After a week of President Barack Obama’s announcement of same-sex marriage, Newsweek magazine has declared him “The First Gay President”.

This latest issue of the Newsweek magazine which featured President Obama on its front cover with a rainbow-colored halo above his head was released on Monday and became the talk of the town. The magazines’ cover story written by Andrew Sullivan, Newsweek political writer and a member of the gay community, looks into Obama’s past dilemma regarding the issue of gay marriage and stated that he celebrates Obama’s support of gay marriage.

The president said in a New York fundraising event that he wanted everyone to be treated fairly and people have never gone wrong when people extended rights and responsibilities to everybody. He said that gay marriage doesn’t weaken families but strengthens families.

Obama’s declaration backing gay marriage created many discussions whether it would help him gain more votes or it will just hurt him in the November election.
